STORY TIME || WORST ROOMMATE EVER??? || Roommate Horror Story

a.k.a why you should never put four girls with different cultural backgrounds as roommates.

look at that clickbait-ish title.

Sorry for the click bait, this story won't be about me :)

Disclaimer: I am not saying that I am the best roommate out there because obviously I am not. Life didn’t come with a how to be a decent roommate handbook. It is fair to say that we are still figuring things out but I think it is safe to say that there is one and the most important rule….. just don’t be an ass.

I know when I said just don’t be an ass that I still sound too vague and as my professor would say, you are not making a good argument, Audrey. In my opinion, the basic rules of not being an ass of a roommate are: flush after yourself, don’t poke around each other’s stuff, establish some bill-paying rules.

I don’t know, bro, just don’t be an ass.

I posted this one story in my old tumblr but now I am here to retell the story because after what I wrote on tumblr, the story picked up. A lot of screaming and crying were involved, several medical students were involved, seniors were involved, dormitory admins were involved, police was involved.

It was a total, complete, mess.

So, I have a friend, let’s refer her as A. In her first year, she had the luck to get the four people room. I don’t know why, I don’t know how, our university’s system is crap. I am not dragging my university, I am just telling you the truth. My university needs a better system to manage the international students.

So, my friend A is Indonesian. Her roommate, B, is “American”*, C and D are from the same country. A country I wish not to disclose to avoid accusations that I am being racist because I am not. C and D are pre-med students, A is majoring in finance, B is majoring in produc design.

I am not gonna sugarcoat anything, living with three other people suck. Especially when you’re not used to live with roommates. B is not used to having a roommate. I am just going to put this out there that, yes, B is a liiiiiitle bit too princess-y and yes, I find her princess-y-ness can be somewhat endearing but, she can be a pain in the neck.

ANYWAYS.

C was actually an okay person, according to A. C was nice to both A and B. She wasn’t that close with D despite the two of them are from the same country because C has a boyfriend—well, at that time he was an almost boyfriend— and D has her own circle of friends. C was actually nice, she paid utility bills on time, flushed after herself but, she liked to poke around B’s stuffs. Not actually poke around, just, you know.. Sometimes she liked to stand a liiiiitle too close to B’s desk and look at B’s stuffs.

Just look though, not really touching. Who doesn’t do that anyway.

Anyways. After the honeymoon phase A, B, and D start to fight over everything. Well, A didn’t really fight fight, she just glared at D with the intensity of a thousand suns. The three of them passive aggressively fight about everything electricity bill, water bill, drinking water bill, alarm noises, sleeping schedules (A and B had morning classes while D was up until 1 or 2 talking on the phone LOUDLY), flushing(this though, HOW CAN YOU NOT FLUSH AFTER YOURSELF WHAT THE HEQ).

C wasn’t around that much because of her almost boyfriend at that time so she was out and about most of the time. D was around quite a lot. The thing is, D was loud, she didn’t clean up after herself, she refused to pay for utility bills (to the point that the dorm admins had to go to their room and breathed down their necks), she didn’t listen when A and B tried to talk to her nicely.

D, in my opinion, was an ass. She didn’t even try to be a decent roommate.

The passive aggressive petty jabs turned into bigger, more aggressive fights.

B installed a security camera on her desk. A was not really bothered by that, as long as the footage of their room is not leaked to the internet and watched by creepy 55 year old men on the internet however, C and D didn’t share the same opinion as A. They were convinced that the footage would somehow end up on the internet, watched by creepy 55 year old men.

C and D asked B to take down the security camera but B downright refused. B insisted that she is not in the wrong because if C and D don’t have the intention to mess with B’s things. C and D argued that having a security camera that connected via online is making them feel unsafe.

The three of them were involved in a heated argument. D even screamed at B’s face that she would personally break the security camera if B won’t take it down. B refused to stand down.

Since A stayed silent through the heated argument, after C and D left the room, B was furious at A because A didn’t stand up for B. B kept saying “after all this time I am being nice to you, you didn’t return the favor!!!” “You should’ve stand up for me!!!” “What is wrong with you?!!” “Why can’t you just be nice to me like me being nice to you!!!”

And A was like “I don’t even understand what you guys are arguing about! I just don’t want to be involved!!”

So for the next few days, A tried anything and everything to avoid staying in her room except for sleep and shower just to avoid her unpleasant roommates.

Everything reaches its peak when D reported B to the International Students Department, B was summoned to the office. The security camera was taken down.

Anyways, it didn’t end there.

Oh boy, it got worse.

Few days after the reporting security camera, D lit up an aromatherapy candle (or something) she lit the candle beside a pile of used tissues. I feel like I need to tell you this: lighting up a candle near paper, tissues, other easily burnt stuffs is dangerous.

So, D lit up an aromatherapy candle beside a pile of used and left the room. B took a picture of this and she said she is going to report this to the International Students Department. D got a scolding.

In my old tumblr, the story ended there.

Oh no, it only got worse. IF you think ratting each other ass is not bad enough, it got worse. Few months after screaming at each other faces after that candle and security camera accident, something happened. At this point, C wasn’t even living in their room anymore. She decided to rent a cheap room near the university because C couldn’t stand B and A anymore. But mostly B.

One night, D came back to the room very late. She was probably getting turnt up with other med students at that night, I don’t know. The point is, she came back very late. A said she came back around 3 or 4 in the morning.

Look, I didn’t know what made A and B thought what they did was the right thing to do. A said B always did what she did and at that point, A couldn’t be bothered to argue with B.

B locked the door. Their room had this latch on the door, I don’t know why they had that latch because other rooms didn’t but their room had this latch in addition of the normal lock. So, Princess B decided to be more secure, they had to use the latch as well. They did this every day not just at that particular night. They would latch the door every night before they sleep. C and D were aware of this and they were okay with it.

So yeah. That one particular night, B latched the door.

A and B are the types of people who rises along with the sun. As in, they are more alive during the day rather at night. While I’m the type who is kind of a nocturnal. Especially B, the princess needs her beauty sleep!

Okay, sorry I am being unnecessarily nyinyir towards B. I’m sorry, it is uncalled for. I am sorry, I can’t find the English equivalent for the word nyinyir—catty, maybe? Idk.

Anyways, so B latched the door then went to sleep. A also went to sleep. Since they latched the door, you wouldn’t be able to get in just by the normal key. D came back at three in the morning, not knowing that B latched the door. She went back at three, wanting to get in but only to find herself locked out of her own room.

According to A’s story, D screamed, screeched, pterodactyl-screeched, banged, and kicked the door in attempt to wake A and B. Amazingly, A and B slept through the screaming, screeching, pterodactyl-screeching, banging, and kicking. D was beyond furious at this point. It was late, cold, and she was locked out of her own room. Since D didn’t get her way, she decided to go to the dorm admins’ place. BUUUT, it was three in the morning the admins were sleeping.

Guess what D did.

D kicked the door of the admins’ rooms and dragged one of them to take care of A and B. D really did kick the door and barged in guys, I am not exaggerating on this. I wish I was but the admin said that herself that D kicked the door and barged in, screaming and crying demanding them to take care of A and B. The admin that got dragged into this was not happy. Oh no, the admin was not a happy camper. That morning, A, B, and D got a long and stern scolding from that admin.

If you think this story time is over………… BOI. You are wrong.

Few days later, A was showering with her newly opened bottle of shampoo. A kept insisting that the bottle was new, she just opened the bottle two days ago or something and the shampoo was completely fine when she used it the day before. One morning, she was showering with her new bottle of shampoo when she realized this hot, burning sensation on her scalp and skin that was touched by the shampoo.

Like any other normal person, A freaked. She tried to clean up as best as she could and examined the shampoo. The shampoo didn’t smell like how it supposed to. A described that it smelt like disinfectant that you usually use to clean the toilet and the consistency of the shampoo was more watery than normal shampoo.

Well, A immediately screamed at D because she was so sure D was the one who sabotaged her shampoo.

Because who would do such vile thing? D is a mean person of course she was the one who did it! B wouldn’t do it!!

That was what A said to me and she didn’t say D was a mean person, she called D something worse, I am really trying to filter my post. Appreciate my effort please.

So yeah, that morning, A raged at D for sabotaging the shampoo and called the dormitory admins to settle this whole shampoo shenanigans. The dorm admin took a sniff at the shampoo and the admin said that something was definitely mixed into the shampoo. B said that A should call the police because this is endangering her life. B basically kept pushing A to go to the police so the whole thing can be processed.

A called the police. Yeap. Police was involved. Another round of screaming at each other ensued. The police was kinda useless though because, police am I right lol.

Police is always useless anyway they never took university students seriously. At that time, few weeks before this whole shampoo shenanigan, my other friend, let’s call her E, was scammed so she lost quite a lot of money from her Alip*y account and she went to the police and the police didn’t do anything. So. I kinda think that the police is kinda useless. Just like police everywhere lol whoops let’s not get into that.

A called the police on D and the four of them was summoned to the police station. I wasn’t sure what went down in the station but since D didn’t speak Chinese, D asked E to accompany her because 1. E is Indonesian so D hoped that E could talk sense into A; 2. E can speak both Chinese and English pretty well.

So, basically, E was trying to translate for D. She was just translating, literally translating D’s words to A and B and vice versa. I feel like I had to emphasize that E was just translating not siding up with anyone.

Now that we have E’s role in the whole crapstorm cleared, I can continue with the story.

In the police station, D fought tooth and nail saying that she didn’t do anything to A’s shampoo. After everyone was summoned to the police station, an Indonesian senior, also a pre-med student who is besties with D’s big sister, let’s call this senior F, texted A asking for what happened. From the receipts, I think that F was just trying to ask what happened BUT A felt attacked because she said that F sounded like A was being unreasonable and being mean and being a bully, etcetera.

But.

Whatever.

The police didn’t really help, they just asked some unimportant stuffs and never really concluded anything. They only confirmed that the shampoo was mixed by something but they couldn’t tell what it was.

There’s no moral conclusion we can pick up from this whole thing honestly, so I’ll just tell you the aftermath of this whole drama:

1.       A and B never really talked to C and D, vice versa. Thank heavens they can ‘divorce’ each other. A and B were still roommates until last semester though.

2.       A is still kinda weird about F, like, she is a liiiiiitle wary around F.

3.       B hates E because B thought that E was standing up for D. E said that whenever B saw her, B would look her up and down with this mean look in her eyes then just scoff. I don’t even know, E told me this.

4.       Whoever poured something into A’s shampoo was never found.

There’s no moral conclusion to this story honestly. I only have an outsider point of view.

1.       D can be gross for not cleaning up after herself, that I can agree. She could’ve been a better roommate for cleaning up after herself but she didn’t. I am obvs not the cleanest person or the neatest person but I clean up after myself.

2.       B is a manipulative person. I know I didn't write about this trait of hers enough in the story time but if I do, boy, this post would be even longer and I'm too lazy to type and I'm sure no one would want to read it.

3.       A shouldn’t have jumped to conclusion and went straight to D’s throat for her shampoo but whatever.
